KDSF-Johor Bahru Communication Camp

The KDSF JB Communication Workshop, happening on July 12 – 13, 2025 (Saturday & Sunday) at the KDSF JB Centre, is open exclusively to parents of KDSF JB Centre. This workshop is designed to empower parents with practical strategies to support their child’s communication and behavior.

Through a series of interactive sessions, parents will learn and practice six key techniques to grow their child’s vocabulary and encourage communication using speech, sign, and/or assistive tools. In addition, the workshop introduces the Antecedent-Behavior-Consequence (A-B-C) approach to help parents better understand and manage their child’s behavior.

Parents will engage in discussions, role-play, and hands-on activities guided by experienced facilitators and staff. Each family is encouraged to bring 1–2 sets of toys and children’s books to enhance participation. Children will also take part in safe and engaging activities while parents reflect and apply what they’ve learned. For more information, please contact Teacher Haniza at 013-739 0025.

KDSF-National Centre Collaboration with USM – Shared Book Reading Training of Trainers Program

On 5 and 6 May 2025, ten of our teachers participated in the Shared Book Reading (SBR) Training of Trainers (ToT) program conducted by Dr. Phoon from Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). The training aimed to equip our team with the skills needed to effectively facilitate the SBR program. Following this, our trained teachers successfully conducted an SBR workshop for parents on 14 June 2025, with approximately 30 participants in attendance.

Shared Book Reading is a literacy practice in which an adult and child read a book together, with the adult actively guiding and engaging the child to support their language and literacy development.

42nd Kiwanis Motor Hunt

The Kiwanis Club of Kuala Lumpur (KCKL) is part of a global community service organisation with its headquarters in Indianapolis, USA. Since its establishment in 1976, KCKL has organized many successful fund raisers to help the community in need. The Kiwanis Motor Treasure Hunt is the club’s major fund-raising activity. The Hunt, now in its 42nd consecutive year, is a very popular annual event, attracting some 400 participants and about 80 to 100 cars during each event.

The annual Kiwanis Motor Treasure Hunt is a major fund raiser for the Kiwanis Down Syndrome Foundation National Centre (KDSF-NC), a permanent service project of KCKL that was started in 1989. The KDSF-NC is an educational facility providing early intervention program for children with Down syndrome (aged 6 and below). The Centre has an enrolment of over 100 children with Down Syndrome and its annual operational cost is about RM 1.1 million. The Centre is now in its 36th year of operations, and it is our responsibility to ensure that we can continue to provide the crucial education program for these special children.

The 42nd Kiwanis Treasure Hunt that will be held on 26-28 July 2025, aims to raise RM400,000 from contributions in the form of event sponsorship,

cash donations, advertisements and prize contributions. We appeal for your support to make this event a success and to make a difference for those in need.

KDSF-Klang Little Explorers’ Adventure Day

10th April- In the early hours of the morning, approximately thirty individuals gathered to establish eight imaginative play stations for the children, including a Clinic, Cooking, Fire Brigade, Scientist, Karaoke, Dancing, and more. They graciously sponsored everything, including lunch, door gifts, and presents for all attendees.

From the depths of our hearts, we sincerely extend our profound gratitude for the generous sponsorship and steadfast commitment to our mission.

KDSF-National Centre World Down Syndrome Day 2025

This year, World Down Syndrome Day was joyfully celebrated at the Centre, with thoughtful consideration given to the fasting month and the fact that March 21 fell on a Friday. To mark the occasion, the teachers organized a Messy Play event themed “Animal Kingdom,” which saw enthusiastic participation from over 50 attendees, including students and their parents. The event provided a fun, meaningful, and inclusive platform for everyone involved.

We are grateful to Standard Chartered, where one of our parents is employed, for generously sponsoring RM2,428 to support the event. Additionally, 10 staff members from Standard Chartered volunteered their time to help run the messy play stations, contributing greatly to the event’s success. Our heartfelt thanks also go to Syimma, who successfully raised RM600 from two generous donors.

As part of the celebration, Rotary Club representative Mike Plasco kindly donated 100 children’s nursery rhyme books to the Kiwanis Down Syndrome Foundation.

Building on this new connection with Standard Chartered, we have submitted a proposal to become an official charity partner for their annual Kuala Lumpur Standard Chartered Marathon (KLSCM). We are currently awaiting their response and remain hopeful for the opportunity to collaborate in the near future.

KDSF-National Centre Chinese New Year Celebration

KDSF-NC was honoured to be invited by Thean Hou Temple to their annual Children’s Party in celebration of Chinese New Year, held on 15 February 2025. A total of 40 students and staff enjoyed the festive activities.

In addition, KDSF-NC held its own in-house Chinese New Year celebration on 22 February, led by the dedicated teachers of the Toddler class. The event brought together around 30 students and over 100 family members. Highlights included a vibrant lion dance performance by Persatuan Kanak-kanak Taman Megah.

We were also deeply grateful for the support of six volunteers from Equinix Malaysia, whose presence added warmth and energy to the occasion. The event was graced by Mr. Cheam Tat Inn, Managing Director of Equinix Malaysia, who presented a mock cheque in recognition of their generous sponsorship of tablets and iPads for KDSF-NC, aimed at supporting AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) use among our students.
