About Us

Our History

It all began in 1988 with a group of passionate Kiwanians from the Kiwanis Club of Kuala Lumpur (KCKL) who shared a common dream—to create a place where children with Down syndrome could receive the care and education they need to thrive.
A year later, in 1989, that dream became a reality. With the guidance of Clinical Psychologist Robert Dellar, KCKL established the Kiwanis Down Syndrome Centre -a first-of-its-kind centre in Malaysia, dedicated entirely to young children with Down syndrome under the age of six. The first centre in Petaling Jaya opened its doors on 11 September 1989, operating from a rented bungalow, marking the start of a journey that would change countless lives.
To ensure long-term support for these children and their families, the Kiwanis Down Syndrome Foundation (KDSF) was officially formed in 1990. With a clear mission to provide Early Intervention Programmes (EIP), KDSF focused on equipping children with the skills they needed to transition into Special Education in government schools and lead more independent lives.
The impact of this initiative soon grew beyond Petaling Jaya. Seeing its success, other Kiwanis Clubs came forward to establish similar centres, leading to the expansion of KDSF across Malaysia. Today, there are four KDSF Centres—located in Petaling Jaya, Johor Bahru, Klang, and Melaka—all dedicated to providing specialized early intervention based on Robert Dellar’s Curriculum.
More than three decades later, KDSF remains true to its purpose. It is still the only organization in Malaysia that provides an Early Intervention Programme solely for young children with Down syndrome, and its mission continues—to nurture, empower, and give every child the opportunity to reach their fullest potential.
